The reptile world is about to get a whole lot more exciting in Sault Ste. Marie with the opening of Eden's Reptiles, a brick-and-mortar store that promises to be more than just your average pet shop. This new venture, led by Ernie and Ruth Rowntree, aims to create a unique and engaging space for reptile enthusiasts and curious minds alike.
A Rescue Mission with a Twist
What sets Eden's Reptiles apart is its focus on rescue animals. With a vast majority of their reptiles being rescued from various parts of northern Ontario, the Rowntrees have dedicated their time and expertise to giving these creatures a second chance at life. But they don't stop at rescue; they educate and inspire, too.
From Home to Hub
After operating out of their home for six years, the couple recognized the need to expand and create a dedicated space for their growing community. Their new store, located at 812 Queen St. E., aims to be a hub where people can connect, learn, and have fun. With around 85 reptiles and amphibians calling it home, including a lone hedgehog, the shop offers a unique and diverse experience.
A Community Hub with a Difference
While customers can expect a standard pet shop experience, with supplies and advice, the Rowntrees envision something more. They want to create an educational and interactive environment. Their 'snake snuggle' sessions, for instance, offer a hands-on learning experience, allowing individuals to connect with these often misunderstood creatures.
Building a Reptile Community
The Rowntrees' background in animal care and their passion for reptiles is evident in their ambitious plans. From hosting evening events for enthusiasts to rolling out a weekly kids' club, they aim to engage and educate people of all ages. By bringing their 'ambassador animals' to birthday parties and hosting events at their home, they've already laid the foundation for a strong community. Now, with their physical storefront, they can take this community-building to the next level.
A Grand Opening and Beyond
The grand opening on May 23 promises to be a fun-filled event, with live music and the opportunity to explore this unique space. But the real excitement lies in the future of Eden's Reptiles. With their dedication to rescue, education, and community building, this store has the potential to become a landmark for reptile enthusiasts and a hub for learning and connection.
In my opinion, initiatives like Eden's Reptiles are a breath of fresh air. They not only provide a service but also contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world. It's an exciting development, and I, for one, can't wait to see how this community hub evolves.
